Issues of unorganized labour in diamond industry

Abstract

Diamond cutting and polishing industry is one of the most important industries of Gujarat. It is one of the most labour intensive industries as large numbers of people are employed in this industry. Diamond cutting and polishing is an unorganized sector and most of the workers are from nearby villages, illiterate and very poor. Recruitment, training, working period, wages/salary, bonus, other benefits motivation, job satisfaction, working condition, saving and borrowing habits of workers are most important issues in the industry. So the problem of their housing and social life become important and requires attention of the policy makers.
