Abstract

The lockdown had many physical as well psychological effects on people. Players who used to participate in sports freely in normal situations during pre-Covid days were not allowed to participate even after some time of unlocking. The present study was conducted to analyze the level of motivation in the national level players of various games. For this research (N=122) 41 female and 81 male national-level players belonging to the age group 16-21 from the different districts of the Gujarat State were included. The players belonged to athletics, swimming, hockey, football, best physique, table tennis and tennis. The levels of motivation were measured by administering Sports Motivation Scale-II (online) between January to September 2021 when the national or the selection trials were conducted. Overall SMS-2 is a shorter and more efficient method of assessing motivation for participation in sports. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) were calculated for outcome variables, depending on their parametric characteristics. The independent 't' test was used to investigate the difference between the female and male national players. The hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The data were analyzed with the JASP statistical software. It was concluded that the level of motivation is found insignificant in three subscales of the SMS-II i.e. amotivation, extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation; and found the significant in three subscales introjected regulation, identified regulation and integrated regulation. The mixed result of the SMS-II was found in the study.
