Social skills of school students of national capital region of India - a study in relation to academic achievement

Abstract

The present study is undertaken to find out the relationship between social skills and academic achievement of secondary school students of National Capital Region (NCR) of India. Social competence refers to the social, emotional, and cognitive skills and behaviors that need for successful social adaptation. The objective of the study was threefold i.e.: 1. to study the level of social skills of students of secondary level from NCR. 2. to examine the relationship between social skills and academic achievement of the students. 3. to study the relationship among different dimensions of social skills and academic achievement. The population of the present study was male & female students studying in high school of different institutions of NCR. The students were ranging within the age group of 13-16 years and belonging to low to medium socio-economic context. Total number of selected students were 300, out of which 150 were girls and 150 were boys. The Social Skills Problem Checklist by Mathur & Arora was used to collect the data from the selected sample. The results revealed significant relationships between Social Skills and Academic Achievement.
