Abstract

The importance of archives in any historical research is considered not only extremely useful but also mandatory. Traditionally, the archives in South Asia houses documentation, which cover the colonial period as the files and papers are mostly about the communications between the colonial administrators. This unfortunately has presented only one side of the story, missing out the other responses of the locals to the policies and decisions taken by the colonial administrators. This was typically the case in British India. The problem gained more prominence in the princely states. Fortunately, the business houses or family-firms had a tradition of maintaining records and preserving them. These documents are often private papers and were preserved by various generations of these families. Some of them fortunately donated these papers to the state archives and sometimes even to the universities. This paper discusses the formation and content of one such regional archive, known as the Haribhakti Archives or Haribhakti Centre for Historical Research at Department of History, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.
