Reimagining Identity: A Study of Janice Pariat’s Representation of Northeast India in Anglophone Literature
Keywords:
Northeast India, Identity, Khasi, Reimagining IdentityAbstract
The Northeast region of India is home to more than 200 tribes
with different languages and dialects, but one language that unites
all these tribes is English. As rightly stated by Frank Smith, ‘One
language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every
door along the way.’ The Northeast Indian writers belonging to
different ethnic groups are now choosing English as their medium
of writing to reach out readers from across the boundaries. The
Anglophone Northeast Indian Writers are experimenting with
new themes and writing styles developed by their own cultural
experiences which ultimately enrich the whole compendium of
the Indian English Writing. The present paper is an endeavour to
analyse select works by Janice Pariat from Meghalaya.
